Yumi was born in one of the better sections of Rukongai - by no means a beautiful place but no where near the terrible extent of districts like the 80th. He was raised by a woman named Kisa, who found him when he was very young. From en early age Yumichika knew how to manipulate people with his looks, managing to procure food and shelter easily by batting his eyelashes. Kisa saw this and decided to take the boy in, forming a bit of a mutually beneficial relationship. Kisa was an entertainer (singing, dancing, instruments) and her talent and Yumi's charm made it quite easy to make a living, even in the hard times.
One thing Kisa taught Yumi was to never rely on his looks alone. He learned this was true from the times people would try to rob them, or take advantage of Kisa, and she would quickly take care of them with a well place kick and a knife. He trained and was given many opportunities to test his skills, as his arrogance and rather bizarre lifestyle always managed to draw enemies.
One day when Yumi was older Kisa angered the wrong man, a member of a local crime ring, and was murdered for it. Yumi returned from an errand to find her body and lost his temper for the first time, using his charm and strength to find the man and kill him, putting a mark on his head. In order to survive he fleed the district, traveling from town to town and using his skills to survive.

He got in the habit of fighting. It wasn't something new, considering the amount of brawls he managed to get himself in well before Kisa's death. He found something in fighting not many understood - a sort of beauty that he dedicated himself to mastering. It was in this way met Ikkaku Madarame. He had heard of Ikkaku's strength and, arrogantly, confronted the man, sure of his victory. He was wrong. Ikkaku was the first person to ever defeat him, much to Yumi's dismay. After a bit of a tantrum Yumi finally began to realize how insignificant his strength was. It was here he reached a cross roads, whether to continue to sharpen his strength or work with only what he had.
Instead of losing hope he became more determined and began to follow Ikkaku, much to the latter's irritation. Ikkaku refused to just kill him outright - stating it would be 'a waste of time.' Each time he managed to hit Yumi down the other would get back up, eventually earning Ikkaku's grudging respect. Also Yumi's talent at getting what he wanted proved useful, so the two eventually formed the strange bond they now share.
One day Ikkaku crossed swords with Zaraki Kenpachi and lost. This would normally mean death but Kenpachi allowed Ikkaku to live so he would continue to get strong and become a challenge for him. When Ikkaku and Yumi heard of Kenpachi joining the Soul Society they followed, becoming seated officers in Kenpachi’s 11th division. Yumi originally wanted to be the third seat, since the symbol for three was the most beautiful to him, but Ikkaku took the spot and he settled for fifth seat, stating it was the next prettiest.
In the Bleach story Yumi first appears to fight one of invaders to the Soul Society, an ally of Ichigo’s named Ganju. Yumi does not take the fight seriously, calling Ganju ‘ugly’ and largely taunting the other man. Ganju ends up using a trick with fireworks, effectively winning the fight and leaving Yumi’s hair in an afro. Yumi wears a wig to hide it and is reunited with Ikkaku in hospital area.
Yumi and Ikkaku end up helping their captain, Kenpachi, with aiding some of the invaders (including Ganju). Yumi fights against Hisagi Shuhei, the vice captain of the ninth division. It looks like Hisagi is going to win but Yumi pulls out a trump card – his zanpakuto. The special ability of his sword is to absorb energy, which apparently has a healing effect on Yumi. It’s unclear how much power he can absorb this way but he defeats Hisagi with it.
He doesn’t have much else in this arc, later reappearing in what is known as the ‘Bount’ arc. He is assigned to help in the human world against the bounts and fights against a bount named Gesell and is gravely injured, needing Renji to take over the fight for him.
Yumi also makes an appearance in the Arrancar Arc, having been assigned to the human world along with Ikkaku, Matsumoto, Hitsugaya, Renji and Rukia. The most memorable fight is against an arrancar named Luppi. He fights briefly alone before Luppi uses his zanpakuto – causing Ikkaku, Matsumoto and Hitsugaya to join him in the fight. They manage to defeat Luppi but the arrancar survives and retreats. At the current point of the manga Yumi and the others are at Soul Society, preparing for the battle with Aizen.

Yumichika is a narrsacist, constantly proclaiming himself to be beautiful while judging other’s appearances and treating them according to their own ‘beauty.’ He’s a bit strange in the 11th division at first glance – being distinctly feminine in many aspects and almost comical in his flamboyancy. Regardless Yumi is a skilled fighter and, most importantly for the 11th, a great lover of fights. He, like the rest of his division, is battle crazy, and enjoys a good fight more than anything else.
Despite his incredible arrogance and vanity Yumi is a reliable division member and fiercly loyal to his captain and to his best friend, Ikkaku Madarame. He doesn’t have a problem with being poor or in a bad area, as long as he can fight and the people around him aren’t ugly.
He hides his zanpakuto’s ability from his captain and division mates due to the general rule that all zanpakuto’s should be direct attack (his is a kidou type, which is considered ‘weak’ by the division). He tells Hisagi to not tell them, showing he either feels some shame towards his ability or at the very least does not want to lose any respect from his division, for whom he respects highly.
